Hyundai
Motor America (Hyundai
) is recalling certain 2023 Genesis
G80 Electric, 2021-2022 Santa Fe Hybrid, and 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.
Remedy
Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioners with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 14, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai
customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai
’s number for this recall is 238/011G. This recall is an expansion of recall numbers 22V-354 and 22V-458.

An abnormal pyrotechnic pretensioner deployment could cause metal fragments to enter the vehicle occupant compartment, which may result in injury to vehicle occupants. The potential for this condition is dependent on vehicle characteristics, pretensioner load limiter specification, airbag control unit logic, crash duration and severity.

A4: Dealer: A dealer “stop sale” has been issued in accordance with federal regulation for affected vehicles unsold at dealers. The stop sale commenced with the filing of the 573 to NHTSA. Port: A “hold” has been issued for all vehicles located at ports.
Q5: What will be done during the recall service at the dealer?
A5: The dealership will install anti-separation protection caps on the front seat belt tensioners for the driver and passenger sides. All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai
dealer to have the remedy completed free of charge, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered under Hyundai
’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

will provide owners of affected vehicles reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain a remedy for the recall condition in accordance with the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on February 24,2022.

On October 17, 2022, HMC notified NASO of the pretensioner testing results of the micro gas generator separation from the pretensioner pipe, a condition referenced in Recalls 211/009G (21V-796), 219 (22V-069), 220 (22V-123), 223 (22V-218), 229 (22V-354) and 231 (22V-458), for non-North American spec Genesis
G80 EV and Hyundai
Santa Fe HEV/PHEV. HMC confirmed no separation of the micro gas generator was observed for North American spec Genesis
G80 EV and Hyundai
Santa Fe HEV/PHEV due to having different airbag control unit logic. HMC communicated its decision for a foreign recall for Genesis
G80 EV and Hyundai
Santa Fe HEV/PHEV for non-North American markets, based on the testing results.
On October 24, 2022, NASO convened its North American Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”). Although no concern was observed for North American spec G80 EV and Santa Fe HEV/PHEV, in an abundance of caution NASO decided to conduct a safety recall of G80 EV vehicles and Santa Fe HEV/PHEV vehicles equipped with pretensioners without a vent valve.

On December 6, 2022, HMC notified NASO of 5 additional G80 EV vehicles to the affected vehicle population initially reported in Hyundai
’s filing of Recall 238 based on reconfirmation of vehicles equipped with pretensioners requiring remedy. Hyundai
is submitting this revision as amended information to the initial Part 573 report for Recall 238.
Hyundai
is not aware of any abnormal pretensioner deployment incidents on G80 EV and Santa Fe HEV/PHEV vehicles, including fatalities, injuries, crashes and fires globally.
Hyundai
is continuing testing of certain out of recall scope vehicles equipped with Samsong pretensioners.

This bulletin describes the procedure to install front seat belt pretensioner anti-separation protection caps. Applicable Vehicles: – Certain 2021-22MY Santa Fe Hybrid (TM HEV) produced between 12/18/2020 – 07/26/2022 – Certain 2022MY Santa Fe Plug-in (TM PHEV) produced between 05/13/2021 – 07/21/2022 Vehicle repairs related to safety recalls are critically important and must be performed properly in accordance with TSB procedures. Review this bulletin in its entirety prior to beginning any repair work. As required by federal law, dealers must not deliver new vehicles for sale or for lease to customers until all open recalls have been performed. Dealers must also perform all open recalls on used vehicles, demo, and rental vehicles prior to placing them into customer use and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair. Access the “Vehicle Information” screen via WEBDCS to identify open recalls. IMPORTANT This TSB includes STUI pictures as a requirement. Recall Description: The front driver’s and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners in certain 2021-2022MY Santa Fe Hybrid & 2022MY Santa Fe Plug-in (PHEV) vehicles were installed containing pyrotechnic-type pretensioners that may deploy abnormally during a crash.
