Chronology :
May 2021
HMA issued a Quality Information Report (“QIR”) to HMMA noting increased warranty claim activity regarding exterior light functionality on certain model year 2022 Hyundai Tucson vehicles in the U.S. market.
June – August 2021
On June 2, 2021, NASO’s Data Review Committee (“DRC”) initiated a preliminary review of the subject condition and began monitoring warranty claims and dealer technical assistance call records.
On August 30, 2021, NASO’s DRC escalated the subject condition to the Technical Review Committee (“TRC”) for further assessment.
October 2021
On October 13, 2021, NASO received HMMA’s response to the prior HMA quality report with initial root cause and countermeasure details concerning the subject condition.
On October 22, 2021, NASO received additional information from HMMA that the ICU supplier identified a production lot containing twelve (12) ICU’s that were produced without completing a required software reflash, causing the onboard software to be incompatible with the vehicle’s exterior lights. Based on this information, NASO reviewed all applicable field data sources to identify and locate all affected vehicles containing the suspect ICU’s.
November 2021
NASO conducted a final review of field information and confirmed that all affected vehicles were accounted for and repaired at U.S. Hyundai dealers. On November 23, NASO convened its North America Safety Decision Authority and decided to file a safety recall notice for the affected vehicles in the U.S. market.
Regarding field claim counts from all available data sources at the time of the filing, Hyundai is aware of twelve (12) vehicles impacted by the subject concern with a receipt date range of March 29 – May 29, 2021. J2534 Diagnostic & Reprogramming - Hyundai
J2534 Reprogramming Software:
The Hyundai Motor America (HMA) J2534 reprogramming software allows for a common method of communication between aPC and a vehicle electronic control unit (ECU). U.S. EPA and CARB regulations mandate that all 2004 and later vehicle powertrain ECUs support emission-related reprogramming.
Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)
The Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software supports a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant passthru VCI device for use on Hyundai vehicles sold in the US. The devices, firmware, and application programming interfaces listed below have been tested by HMA and under no circumstances do we recommend the use of a non-approved J2534 device. HMA has worked closely with the following J2534 device manufacturers to ensure the hardware and software comply with all J2534-1/2 specifications.
