Attachment A: Requested Chronology of Events Leading Up to Decision
❖ March – April 2024
On March 24, 2024, HMC informed NASO of a new global investigation into customer allegations of loss of motive power while driving due to malfunction of the EGR valve sensor in certain Hyundai vehicles in various markets including the U.S.
On April 10, 2024, HMC provided an update of its investigation to NASO and other affected regional offices. The investigation was escalated to the Technical Review Committee (“TRC”) at the request of HMNA’s Chief Safety Officer.
By April 17, 2024, the TRC identified 14 total unique incidents related to the subject defect condition in the U.S. market. HMC informed the TRC of information received from the supplier indicating a manufacturing issue involving solder flux contamination of the EGR valve sensor leads. According to HMC, the flux contamination could carbonize over time, potentially leading to an electrical short between the terminal leads. Additionally, the electrical short can disrupt power to the crankshaft position sensor, resulting in a vehicle stall.
Based on HMC’s findings, on April 23, 2024, HMA’s NASO convened its North America Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”) for review of the TRC’s recommendation and decided to conduct a safety recall of affected Hyundai vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.
❖ NASO has identified 14 unique incidents attributable to this condition in the U.S. from reports received from March 12, 2024, through April 17, 2024. There are no related crashes, injuries, or fatalities in the U.S.
