Summary
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Tucson and Santa Cruz vehicles. The circuit board in the motor-driven power steering assembly may short circuit, resulting in a loss of power steering assist.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the motor-driven power steering electric power pack, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 3, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 261.

Attachment A: Requested Chronology of Events Leading Up to Decision
❖ May 2024
From May 17, 2024, through May 20, 2024, Hyundai identified five (5) Hyundai vehicles located at vehicle processing center(s) (“VPC”) with confirmed malfunctions of the MDPS system, including illumination of the MIL and a loss of power steering assist.
Information regarding these vehicles was sent to Hyundai’s North American Quality Center (“NAQC”), who then informed NASO of the condition found in the incident vehicles on May 23, 2024. Additionally, NASO received information from HMMA regarding a solder issue found during recent vehicle production which may have contributed to the failure of the MDPS in these vehicles.
On May 24, 2024, NASO registered a new safety investigation into the MDPS failures and immediately escalated the matter to the Technical Review Committee (“TRC”) for analysis and consideration of remedial action.
On May 28, 2024, NASO’s TRC received information from HMMA regarding contaminated solder flux used in production of the MDPS “Electric Power Pack,” which contains the PCB controller used for the MDPS system. According to the supplier, the contaminated flux increases the risk of an electrical short, potentially resulting in an MDPS failure and subsequent loss of power steering assist. HMMA also provided information regarding affected models and production dates during this discussion.
On May 29, 2024, HMA’s NASO convened its North America Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”) for review of the TRC’s findings and decided to conduct a safety recall of affected Hyundai vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.
❖ In addition to the five (5) unique incidents occurring at VPC’s, NASO has identified two (2) unique incidents involving sold vehicles in the U.S. from reports received on May 15, 2024, and May 16, 2024. There are no crashes, injuries, or fatalities attributable to this condition in the U.S.
