Attachment A: Chronology of Events Leading Up to Decision
❖ June 2023 – January 2024
In June 2023, HMC informed HMNA’s NASO of an ongoing investigation into reports of turbocharger oil supply pipe cracking in certain Genesis vehicles equipped with 3.3L-turbocharged engines in Korea and other foreign markets. NASO’s Data Review Committee (“DRC”) conducted a preliminary review of field information in August 2023, identifying an increasing trend of turbocharger oil supply pipe repairs performed during cold season(s).
❖ January 2024 – March 2024
On January 24, 2024, HMC informed NASO of an update to its investigation. According to HMC, the material used in the subject oil supply pipe was found to be susceptible to cracking after prolonged exposure to high ambient heat in the engine compartment and subsequent cooling or hardening of the pipe material.
On February 8, 2024, the DRC escalated the investigation to the Technical Review Committee (“TRC”) based on their findings. NASO’s TRC reviewed North American market field data, confirming incidents alleging similar conditions to those identified in foreign markets by HMC. During its analysis of the subject vehicles, the TRC also noted repeat repairs associated with Recall 003G, a safety recall launched in August 2019 to address an oil leak condition caused by insufficient swaging of the turbocharger oil supply pipe fitting near the center union in certain model year 2017-2018 Genesis G80 and G90 vehicles in the U.S. According to HMC, the turbocharger oil supply pipe(s) in the subject vehicles, including those involved in Recall 003G, were produced before a pipe material change to stainless steel implemented by the supplier around August 2021.
Based on HMC and TRC findings, NASO convened its North American Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”) on March 1, 2024, and decided to file a new safety recall to address the turbocharger oil supply pipe in all U.S. and Canadian market Genesis vehicles produced prior to the stainless steel pipe material change, including all vehicles previously recalled in Recall 003G.
❖ As of the date of this filing, HMNA has identified 81 reports received from June 22, 2020, through January 15, 2024, alleging the defect condition in the U.S. market. HMNA is not aware of any confirmed crashes, injuries or fires related to the recall condition.
