Driver Air Bag may not Fully Inflate

In the event of a crash, an air bag that does not inflate fully increases the risk of injury.

 

Summary

HyundaieBay Motor Company (HyundaieBay) is recalling certain model year 2017 HyundaieBay Elantra vehicles manufactured April 15, 2016, to September 13, 2016, and Sonata vehicles manufactured May 27, 2016 to September 16, 2016.

In these vehicles, the end seal for the driver’s frontal air bag inflator may not have been properly installed, possibly resulting in reduced inflation of the frontal air bag in the event of a crash.

 

Remedy

HyundaieBay will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver’s frontal air bag module, free of charge.

The recall began February 13, 2017.

As required by federal law, dealers must not deliver new vehicles for sale or for lease to customers until all open recalls have been performed. Dealers must also perform all open recalls on used vehicles, demo and rental vehicles prior to placing them into customer use and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

 

Affected Vehicles

As previously announced, HyundaieBay launched a safety recall to inspect and/or replace the driver’s front airbag on 110 total 2017 Elantra sedans and 2017 Sonata vehicles.

 

Reason for this Recall

There may have been a manufacturing issue with the driver’s front airbag inflator which may result in reduced inflation of the frontal airbag when deployed.

 

Parts

  • If needed, parts can be ordered through the normal parts ordering process in WebDCS. Refer to the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #17-01-011 for parts details.

 

Service Action

  • The Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #17-01-011 was published 1/31/17, and describes the procedure to inspect the driver’s frontal airbag serial number and replace if necessary.
  • Affected VINs are posted on WebDCS> Service Tab> Information> Uncompleted Campaign VIN Listing –Dealer Stock and Retailed. Dealers may use owner information provided for the purpose of conducting and performing this recall, and for no other purpose.

 

Customer Notification

HyundaieBay will notify all owners of the vehicles described above to return their vehicles to their HyundaieBay dealers for repair. Customer notification letters of the recall are scheduled to be mailed in February.

Dealers must perform this Recall Campaign on all affected vehicles prior to customer retail delivery and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

When a vehicle arrives at the Service Department, access HyundaieBay Motor America’s “Warranty Vehicle Information” screen via WEBDCS to identify open Campaigns.

 

Description: Certain 2017 Sonata and Elantra vehicles have driver’s air bags that may not inflate as designed in a collision. A failure of the driver’s air bag to properly inflate could increase the risk of injury to the driver in a frontal collision warranting deployment of the air bag. This bulletin describes the service procedure to inspect, and if necessary, replace the Driver Air Bag (DAB).

NOTE 2: If a part is found in need of replacement while performing Recall Campaign 156 and the affected part is still under warranty, submit a separate claim using the same Repair Order.

 

Service Procedure:

  1. If applicable, record the customer’s radio preset stations for AM/FM/XM.
  2. Pull hood release to open the hood to access the battery.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes prior to performing the Driver Air Bag (DAB) replacement procedure.

4.0 ~ 6.0 N.m (0.4 ~ 0.6 kgf.m, 3.0 ~ 4.4 lbft)

  1. Locate the 3 locking points of the Driver Air Bag (DAB).

  1. Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the locking hole, and press on the 3 snap fit pin stopper to release the Driver Air Bag (DAB) module.

  1. Gently remove the Driver Air Bag (DAB) module from the steering wheel after depressing the snap fit pin stopper.

Be careful not to damage the clock spring connections.

  1. For ALL Sonata vehicles:

Proceed to Step 8 to replace the driver’s air bag module.

 

For Elantra (VIN starts with “5”):

Proceed to Step 8 to replace the driver’s air bag module.

 

For Elantra (VIN starts with “K”):

A) Only if the air bag serial number is I2CUB1863733, proceed to Step 8 to replace the driver’s air bag module.

B) If the serial number is different, reinstall the original air bag and all other parts in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Disconnect the squib and horn connectors  and remove the Driver Air Bag (DAB) from     the steering wheel.

Sonata squib connectors have an orange locking tab at the top that can be released using a small flathead screwdriver.

 

CAUTION

The removed air bag module should be stored in a clean, dry place with the pad cover facing up.

Elantra

Elantra squib connectors have an orange locking mechanism on either side of the connector that needs to be pulled up (away from DAB assembly) to release the connector.

  1. Install the new driver airbag module in the reverse order of removal, ensuring that the module is fully seated to the steering wheel (all 3 snap fit pins will click into position and air bag module will be flush with the steering wheel).

 

NOTICE

Sonata: Fully seat squib connector before seating locking tab.

Elantra: Squib locking tabs automatically engage when the connector is seated.

  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Turn the ignition ON and confirm no DTC(s) are present.

If a DTC(s) is present, use the GDS / GDS Mobile to clear the code.

If applicable, clear any DTCs in the Blue Link system per instructions of TSB 12-BE005-2.

  1. If applicable, reprogram the customer’s radio presets for AM/FM/XM.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  HyundaieBay has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2017 HyundaieBay Elantra vehicles.  Our records indicate that your vehicle is affected by this safety recall.

 

What is the problem?

  • HyundaieBay has determined there may have been a manufacturing issue with the driver’s front airbag inflator which could result in reduced inflation of the frontal airbag in a crash. A failure of the driver’s airbag to properly inflate could increase the risk of injury to the driver in a frontal collision warranting deployment of the driver airbag.

 

What will HyundaieBay do?

  • Your HyundaieBay dealer will verify the serial number of the driver’s airbag in your vehicle, and replace the airbag if necessary. This procedure will be performed at no charge to you.  The actual time required to perform the procedure should be less than 1 hour, however your vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.
