OCS Electrical Connector may Disconnect

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.

Summary

HyundaieBay Motor America (HyundaieBay) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 GenesiseBay Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016.

The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.

Remedy

HyundaieBay will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge.

Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available.

Owners may contact HyundaieBay customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

HyundaieBay’s number for this recall is 151.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Attn: Dealer Principal/General Manager/Service Manager/Parts Manager

Subject: Recall Campaign 151: 2010-2016 GenesiseBay Coupe Occupant Classification System (TSB #16-01-042)

***IMPORTANT Dealer Stock and Retail Vehicles***

As required by federal law, dealers must not deliver new vehicles for sale or for lease to customers until all open recalls have been performed. Dealers must also perform all open recalls on used vehicles, demo and rental vehicles prior to placing them into customer use and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

Affected Vehicles

HyundaieBay has launched a recall related to the connector for the front passenger seat’s Occupant Classification System (OCS) on Model Year 2010 through 2016 GenesiseBay Coupe vehicles.

Reason for this Recall

If objects are placed under the front passenger seat and contact the OCS connector, the connector can become disconnected, illuminating the Air Bag warning lamp in the instrument cluster.  If this occurs, the front passenger airbag will deploy in a frontal collision regardless of the front passenger seat occupant.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL

This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Dear HyundaieBay GenesiseBay Coupe Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  HyundaieBay has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in Model Year 2010 through 2016 HyundaieBay GenesiseBay Coupe vehicles produced beginning on beginning on December 18, 2008  through June 11, 2016.  Our records indicate that your vehicle falls within this production date range.

What is the problem?

  • The HyundaieBay GenesiseBay Coupe is equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS) to determine if the front passenger seat is occupied, and if so, detect the presence of a Child Restraint System or small statured occupant. In certain cases, the front passenger airbag is deactivated to help prevent airbag-related injuries to the front passenger. Additionally, the system’s second stage airbag will not deploy in more severe collisions.

What will HyundaieBay do?

  • Your HyundaieBay dealer will secure the OCS connector to prevent disconnection. This procedure will be performed at no charge to you.  The actual time required to perform the procedure should be less than 1 hour, however your vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.

What should you do?

This is an important Safety Recall

  • Schedule a service appointment at your local HyundaieBay dealer.

Reimbursement Notification

  • HyundaieBay has a program for reimbursing owners of Model Year 2010 through 2016 HyundaieBay GenesiseBay Coupe vehicles produced beginning on beginning on December 18, 2008 through June 11, 2016 who paid to have the recall condition remedied prior to receiving this recall notification letter.  To obtain information about reimbursement from HyundaieBay, and submit your request for reimbursement electronically, please visit:
