Customer Talk Tracks
Sample (customer already at dealership): “During your visit we checked to see if your vehicle has any open recalls. We found that Recall 013G for the front seat belt pretensioners is open on your vehicle. We are going to install front and rear seat belt pretensioner anti-separation protection caps to prevent abnormal deployment of the pretensioners at no cost to you. An abnormal pyrotechnic pretensioner deployment could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants depending on specific vehicle characteristics such as pretensioner load limiter specification, airbag control unit logic, crash duration/severity, and micro-gas generator orientation.”
Sample (customer calling in): “During your call-in, we checked to see if your vehicle has any open recalls. Customer FAQ:
Q1: What is the issue?
A1: The subject vehicles are equipped with frontal/rear pyrotechnic-type seat belt pretensioners that could deploy abnormally in certain crashes due to over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe.
Q2: What are the affected vehicles?
A2: The subject vehicles include certain 2023MY Genesis
G90 vehicles produced from April 21, 2022 through February 21, 2023 by Hyundai
Motor Company (“HMC”) for sale in the U.S. market.
Q3: What is the safety concern?
A3: An abnormal pyrotechnic pretensioner deployment could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants depending on specific vehicle characteristics such as pretensioner load limiter specification, airbag control unit logic, crash duration/severity, and micro-gas generator orientation.
Q4: Have there been any accidents or injuries?
A4: As of the date of this filing, Hyundai
/Genesis
is not aware of any abnormal pretensioner deployment incidents on the subject Genesis
vehicles, including fatalities, injuries, crashes and fires globally.

RECALL 013G ATTACHMENT A
CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS LEADING UP TO DEFECT DECISION
October 2022
❖ On October 7, 2022, Hyundai
received the agency’s Information Request letter pertaining to RQ22- 003, an investigation into allegations of abnormal seat belt pretensioner deployments in vehicles associated with Recalls 21V-796, 22V-069, 22V-123, 22V-218, 22V-354, and 22V-458*.
❖ On October 24, 2022, NASO convened its North American Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”) and initiated Recall 22V-816.
November – December 2022
❖ In November 2022, the airbag control unit (“ACU”) from the September 2021, North Carolina incident referenced in earlier chronologies* was recovered for analysis of the crash pulse parameters by HMC and the supplier, Samsong.
❖ On December 7, 2022, Hyundai
submitted its response to the agency’s inquiry regarding RQ22-003. Hyundai
cited in its response that it was continuing to evaluate vehicles equipped with Samsong pretensioners that had not yet been recalled despite not having received any domestic or foreign reports of the alleged defect involving these vehicles.
January – February 2023
❖ On January 17, 2023, HMC informed NASO of its findings from continued analysis of the ACU crash pulse data recovered from the North Carolina incident. HMC confirmed that the MGG separated despite a lower pretensioner “time-to-fire” when compared to the other known incidents.
❖ On January 26 and February 2, 2023, HMC provided updates regarding its investigation to NASO. HMC confirmed replication of MGG separation during recent sled testing using RS4 (G90) SRS components. The test results prompted a reevaluation of leading factors, such as vehicle-specific “time-to-fire,” previously thought to be potential contributors to over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe.
❖ On February 9, 2023, NASO convened its NASDA. Although no concern was observed in North American markets, based on the recent findings by HMC, and in an abundance of caution, NASO decided to conduct safety recall 012G (23V-094) of Genesis
G80, GV60, GV70, and GV80 vehicles equipped with pretensioners without a vent valve. Recall 012G (23V-094) supersedes Recall 009G, obsoleting all affected population(s) of Recall 211/009G (21V-796).
❖ Hyundai
is not aware of any abnormal pretensioner deployment incidents in the global market involving the subject vehicles, including fatalities, injuries, crashes, and fires.
March 2023
❖ On March 1, 2023, NASO met with ODI to review details surrounding Hyundai
’s assessment of the open RQ investigation and recent associated recalls. During the review, Hyundai
noted that the recent recalls address all U.S. vehicles equipped with the subject Samsong seat belt pretensioner excluding Genesis
G90 vehicles, which contain seat belt pretensioners that face outward and away from occupants instead of inward and toward occupants in the recalled vehicles. Based on recent testing performed by HMC, replication of MGG separation in G90 vehicles did not result in the MGG fragments entering the cabin area due to the outboard orientation of the pretensioner, thus concluding that Genesis
G90 vehicles are at significantly lower risk due to the unique orientation of the equipped seat belt pretensioners.
❖ During subsequent discussions with the agency, ODI provided feedback on its assessment of Hyundai
’s investigation and recall scope.
❖ Based on the feedback received from the agency, on March 21, 2023, NASO convened its NASDA. Although no concern was observed in North American markets and recent testing by HMC confirmed lower risk of injury due to the unique orientation of the pretensioners, in an abundance of caution, NASO decided to conduct a safety recall (013G) of Genesis
G90 vehicles equipped with pretensioners without a vent valve.
