Integrated Electronic Brake System Malfunction

Reduced braking power could lengthen the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Nexo Fuel Cell and 2019-2021 Kona Electric vehicles. The Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) system may detect an abnormal sensor signal and as a result, may significantly reduce braking performance.

 

Remedy

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will update the IEB software, free of charge. The recall began January 25, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 199.

Description: Certain Kona EV (OS EV) and Nexo (FE) vehicles are equipped with an Integrated Electronic Brake (“IEB”) system that might illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (“MIL”) and significantly reduce braking performance upon detection of DTC C240201. This bulletin describes the procedure to update the IEB system with revised software to improve braking performance if DTC C240201 is detected.

Service Procedure:

NOTICE

This Service Procedure is performed using GDS-mobile. For update information and general  precautions, please refer to TSB #15-GI-001.   

Manual mode should only be performed when the Auto update fails.

  

If the auto update fails, turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds, then back ON again to reset  the control unit before performing the manual update.

 

  1. Select ECU Upgrade.

 

  1. Select ABS/ESC as the system to update.

 

  1. Check the current version of the ABS/ESC ROM ID and compare it to the ROM ID Information Table listed above before attempting to update the ABS/ESC system.

 

  1. Perform GDS software update. Refer to TSB 15-GI-001 for the tablet-based Mobile GDS ECU update procedures.

 

  1. After the software has updated, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes in the ALL menus and erase any DTCs.

J2534 Reprogramming Software:

The Hyundai Motor America (HMA) J2534 reprogramming software allows for a common method of communication between aPC and a vehicle electronic control unit (ECU). U.S. EPA and CARB regulations mandate that all 2004 and later vehicle powertrain ECUs support emission-related reprogramming.

 

Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)

The Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software supports a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant passthru VCI device for use on Hyundai vehicles sold in the US. The devices, firmware, and application programming interfaces listed below have been tested by HMA and under no circumstances do we recommend the use of a non-approved J2534 device. HMA has worked closely with the following J2534 device manufacturers to ensure the hardware and software comply with all J2534-1/2 specifications.
