An improperly calibrated ODS may not detect the front passenger-side occupant, resulting in suppression of the passenger-side frontal airbags during a crash. This bulletin provides the procedure to calibrate the Occupant Detection System (“ODS”) using the GDS tool. Applicable Vehicles (Certain): 2024MY Palisade (LX2) equipped with Calligraphy Night Edition AWD trim package and dark premium seats produced from 07/04/2023 – 07/19/2023 Warranty Information: MODEL OP. NOTE 2: If a part is found in need of replacement while performing this recall and the affected part is still under warranty, submit a separate claim using the same repair order. If the affected part is out of warranty, submit a Prior Approval request for goodwill consideration prior to performing the work. NOTE 3: This TSB includes Repair validation photos. Op times include VIN, Mileage and Repair validation photos as outlined in the Digital Documentation Policy. Vehicle repairs related to safety recalls are critically important and must be performed properly in accordance with TSB procedures. Review this bulletin in its entirety prior to beginning any repair work. As required by federal law, dealers must not deliver new vehicles for sale or for lease to customers until all open recalls have been performed. Dealers must also perform all open recalls on used vehicles, demo, and rental vehicles prior to placing them into customer use and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair. Confirm the Heater Variance under Value column is displayed as “Not Supported”. If it is displayed as “Heater” or “Non-Heater” then perform the calibration procedure again by repeating steps 2-7. 12. Locate the “Passenger Air Bag” light. It should be on the Dome Lamp assembly. Turn the ignition to ON position. The “Passenger Air Bag” light should be lit. An improperly calibrated ODS might not detect the passenger-side occupant, resulting in suppression of the passenger-side frontal airbags and increased risk of injury to occupants of the passenger seat. As such, these vehicles would fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, “Occupant Class Protection.” FMVSS 1 : 208 – Occupant crash protection FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Nondeployment of the passenger-side frontal airbags could increase the risk of injury to passenger occupants during a crash. Description of the Cause : The ODS calibration used in the subject vehicles is specified for a different seat material type (standard leather). According to the supplier, use of an improper ODS calibration could inadvertently suppress the passenger-side frontal airbags, preventing commanded deployment of the airbags in a crash. On August 18, 2023, HMC informed NASO of the supplier’s findings. NASO quickly performed a market field data analysis and convened its North America Safety Decision Authority and decided to conduct a noncompliance recall of all affected vehicles in the U.S. citing a failure to comply with the requirements set forth in FMVSS No. 208, “Occupant Class Protection.” As of the date of this filing, there are no incidents, confirmed crashes, fires, or injuries related to the subject condition in the U.S. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-599 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer to update the calibration software in the ODS. This remedy will be offered at no cost to owners for all affected vehicles, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered under Hyundai’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Additionally, Hyundai will provide owners of affected vehicles reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain a remedy for the recall condition in accordance with the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on February 24, 2022. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The ODS software contains the correct calibration for the suede “Dark Premium” seats.
