Hyundai
Motor America (Hyundai
) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment.
Remedy
Hyundai
will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the low-pressure fuel hose for damage or leaking, replacing it as necessary. If no damage or leaking is found, heat-protective tape will be installed. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 10, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai

has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in your vehicle, with the VIN shown above. Hyundai
is conducting a safety recall in the United States to repair the low pressure fuel feed line in certain model year 2013 – 2014 Sonata vehicles produced by Hyundai
Motor Manufacturing Alabama (“HMMA”).
The purpose of this letter is to explain what the recall is about and to keep you informed of Hyundai
’s recall implementation plan. We are currently making preparations to implement the safety recall remedy which when available, will be performed at no cost to you. We will send you another notification when the remedy is available.
What is the problem?
The fuel feed line connecting the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump in the subject vehicles could develop a small crack over time due to ambient heat in the engine compartment. A damaged fuel line could allow fuel to leak increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire.
What should you do in the interim?
We appreciate your patience. Hyundai
is currently making preparations to implement the recall remedy. You will receive a second notification letter when the remedy is available. In the interim, if the Malfunction Indicator Light is illuminated in your vehicle, you should seek service at your Hyundai

When a vehicle arrives at the Service Department, access Hyundai
Motor America’s Vehicle Information Screen (VIS) via WEBDCS to identify open Campaigns.
Description:
On certain 2013-2014MY Sonata vehicles, the fuel feed line connecting the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump could develop a small crack over time due to ambient heat in the engine compartment. A damaged fuel line could allow fuel to leak, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire.
This bulletin describes the procedure to inspect the fuel feed line for damage and/or leakage and to replace the fuel tube if necessary or to otherwise improve the connection between the low-pressure fuel tube and fuel pump.

NOTE 1: Submit Claim on Campaign Claim Entry Screen
NOTE 2: If a part is found in need of replacement while performing Recall 189 and the affected part is still under warranty, submit a separate claim using the same Repair Order. If the affected part is out of warranty, submit a Prior Approval Request for goodwill consideration prior to performing the work. NOTE 3: Oil Test Paper will be reimbursed via sublet for both labor operations. PET Tape & cable tie will be reimbursed via sublet for labor op 01DA19R0 only.
Inspection Procedure:
- Remove Engine Cover.
- Clean the area around the fuel feed tube connector (A).
- While the engine is idling:
-
- Wipe the area around the fuel feed tube connector using the oil test paper (B).
-
- Check the area for any indication of fuel leakage or smell.
OK:
If the oil test paper appearance does not change and if there is no indication of fuel leakage/smell, proceed to step 4.
NOT OK:
If the oil test paper becomes darker or if there is indication of fuel leakage/smell, follow the fuel tube replacement procedure on Page 7.
- Visually inspect the fuel tube for any damage.
If damage is found, follow the replacement procedure on Page 7.
If NO damage is found, proceed to Taping procedure on Page 5.
Taping Procedure :
- Record the vehicle’s audio presets, then disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
NOTICE
NOTE: Wait at least 30 seconds before proceeding with any of the following procedures.
- Disconnect the fuel feed tube connector:
-
- Disengage the lock by pulling up on the tab (C).
-
- Pull away the connector while squeezing the tabs (D) on both sides of the fuel line.
CAUTION
Fuel line may still be pressurized, disconnect the fuel feed connector with caution.
- Using PET tape (E), wrap tightly around the marked taping area (F) at least 10 times.
PET tape should cover the entire taping area.
NOTICE
NOTE: Please wrap PET tape tightly around the tube to ensure proper adhesion when applied.
- Using a cable tie (G), wrap around the taped area and fasten.
Cut the excess of the cable tie and reconnect the fuel feed tube connector.
- Reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order of removal. Reconnect the negative (-) battery cable and reprogram vehicle’s audio presets.
Replacement Procedure :
- Record the vehicle’s audio presets, then disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
NOTICE
NOTE: Wait at least 30 seconds before proceeding with any of the following procedures.
- Disconnect the fuel feed tube connector:
-
- Disengage the lock by pulling up on the tab (H).
-
- Pull away the connector while squeezing the tabs (I) on both sides of the low-pressure fuel line.
CAUTION
Fuel line may still be pressurized, disconnect the fuel feed connector with caution.
For 2.0L Turbo vehicles, remove air intake and air ducting according to the applicable vehicle shop manual.
For 2.4L vehicles, skip to Step 4.
- Uninstall two bundle clips (J) & (K) located next to the engine to separate the low pressure fuel line.
- Disengage the bundle clip (L) attached on the firewall.
- Uninstall the lower left hand body cover by removing four nuts (M).
- Disengage the bundle clip (N) attached on the firewall.
The nut on the bundle clip (N) will need to be removed to open the metal retainer.
- Push the center retaining clip (O) through in order to release the line guard.
- Pull the front half of the line guard (P) down.
- Release the low-pressure fuel line from the bundle clip (Q).
- Disconnect the low-pressure fuel line connector by pulling while squeezing the blue tabs (R) on both sides.
CAUTION
Fuel may leak out, once line is disconnected.
- Install a new fuel feed tube assembly and reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order of removal. Reconnect the negative (-) battery cable and reprogram vehicle’s audio presets.

The actual time required to perform the installation will take less than an hour, however your vehicle may be needed longer, therefore we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.

is initiating this action to ensure the safety and compliance of its vehicles and the continued satisfaction of Hyundai
customers.
Description
Certain 2013-2014MY Sonata vehicles’ fuel feed line, connecting the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump, could develop a small crack over time due to ambient heat in the engine compartment.
A damaged fuel line could allow fuel to leak, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire.
Service Action
Reservation – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and advise the customer on time requirements.
- Provide customer with transportation options such as an SRC, alternative vehicle, shuttle or rideshare.
Readiness – Review this announcement and the accompanying FAQs with all Service and Parts staff including
Reservationist/BDC. Also, complete all applicable training, check your reservation capacity settings (you can set separate capacities for every recall/campaign), confirm email addresses for campaign appointments, and that you have all necessary tools, campaign parts and shop equipment as needed.
Reception – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and print a copy for technicians. Provide SRC or an alternative vehicle, as needed. If a customer has declined the campaign, note this on the repair order and request the customer’s signature next to the statement.
Repair – Always plug in the GDS before starting the repair. Make sure to complete an MPI on all vehicles and Quality Control your work.
- Always remember to record the audio presets before disconnecting the negative (-) battery terminal and wait at least 30 seconds before proceeding with any repairs.
- When disconnecting the fuel feed connector, proceed with caution as the fuel line may still be pressurized.
- When disconnecting the low-pressure fuel line connector, proceed with caution as fuel may leak out once the line is disconnected.
- Make sure PET Tape is wrapped tightly around tube to ensure proper adhesion when applied.
Return – Review all completed campaign and repairs to answer any customer questions. Also, schedule the customer’s next service.
Reconnect – Follow up for customer satisfaction.
Parts
Review the Special Service Tools and Parts required to complete this campaign on page 2 of the TSB.
The same oil test paper used for Recall 180 is also being used for this Recall 189. Please check before ordering any additional test paper as your dealership may already have some on-hand.
Three (3) rolls of PET Tape have been sent and provided to all dealers for the start of this campaign. Each roll of PET tape does 30 vehicles. You may contact your Regional Warranty Manager (RWM) if you would like to track your shipment of tape for arrival at your dealership.
Customer Notification
This recall has been posted with NHTSA. Initial notification letters were mailed to owners in late April 2020. Owners are expected to receive final notification letters that a remedy is available August 2020 or earlier.
