Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020 Elantra vehicles. The lower control arm ball joint fasteners may have been insufficiently tightened allowing the ball joint to detach from the lower control arm.

 

Remedy

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, tighten the ball joint fasteners, free of charge. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 185.

Dealers must perform this Recall Campaign on all affected vehicles prior to customer retail delivery and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

When a vehicle arrives at the service department, access Hyundai Motor America’s “Warranty Vehicle Information” screen via WEBDCS to identify open Campaigns.

 

Description: On certain 2020 model year Elantra (ADa) vehicles, the fasteners securing the lower control arm ball joints may not have been properly tightened during assembly. Loose ball joint fasteners may allow the ball joint to separate from the lower control arm, increasing the risk of a crash. This bulletin describes the procedure to confirm lower control arm ball joint fastener torque, and correct if needed.

 

Applicable Vehicles: Certain 2020MY Elantra (ADa) vehicles produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (VIN beginning with a “5”) from September 4, 2019 through September 10, 2019.

NOTE 1: Submit Claim on Campaign Claim Entry Screen

NOTE 2: If a part is found in need of replacement while performing Recall TBD and the affected part is still under warranty, submit a separate claim using the same Repair Order. If the affected part is out of warranty, submit a Prior Approval Request for goodwill consideration prior to performing the work.

 

Service Procedure:

1. Raise the vehicle and remove the front  tire/wheel assemblies.

 

NOTICE 

The front wheels must be removed to gain access to all of the ball joint fasteners.

 

2. Verify the bolt (A) and two nuts (B) that secure the ball joint to the lower control arm are tightened to specification.

 

Tightening Torque:

98.1 ~ 117.7 N.m

(10.0 ~ 12 kgf.m, 72.3 ~ 86.6 lb-ft)

 

Repeat the procedure for the opposite side of the vehicle.

 

3. Reinstall the front tire/wheel assemblies  onto the vehicle.

 

Tightening Torque:

107.9 ~ 127.5 N.m

(11.0 ~ 13.0 kgf.m, 79.6 ~ 94.0 lb-ft)

Hyundai has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2020 Hyundai Elantra vehicles produced between September 4, 2019 through September 10, 2019 by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (“HMMA”) in the U.S. Our records indicate that your vehicle is affected.

 

What is the problem?

The fasteners securing the ball joints to the lower control arms in the subject vehicles may have been insufficiently tightened during assembly, increasing the risk of ball joint detachment from the lower control arm while driving. A detached lower ball joint while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

 

What will Hyundai do?

Your Hyundai dealer will inspect and tighten the ball joint fasteners, if necessary. This procedure will be performed at NO CHARGE  to you.

The actual time required to perform the installation will take less than one hour, however your vehicle may be needed longer, therefore we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.

Affected Vehicles

Hyundai is conducting a safety recall in the United States to inspect and, if necessary, tighten the lower ball joint attachment fasteners on certain model year 2020 Hyundai Elantra vehicles produced between September 4, 2019 through September 10, 2019 by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (“HMMA”) in the U.S.

 

The affected vehicles include:

• Certain 2020MY Elantra (ADa) vehicles produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (VIN beginning with a “5”) from September 4, 2019 through September 10, 2019.

 

Hyundai is initiating this action to ensure the safety and quality of its vehicles and the continued satisfaction of Hyundai customers.

 

Description

The fasteners securing the ball joints to the lower control arms in the subject vehicles may have been insufficiently tightened during assembly, increasing the risk of ball joint detachment from the lower control arm while driving.  A detached lower ball joint while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

 

Service Action

Reservation – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and advise the customer on time requirements.

• Provide customer with transportation options such as an SRC, alternative vehicle, shuttle or rideshare.

 

Readiness – Review this announcement and the accompanying FAQs with all Service and Parts staff including

Reservationist/BDC. Also, complete all applicable training, check your reservation capacity settings (you can set separate capacities for every recall/campaign), confirm email addresses for campaign appointments, and that you have all necessary tools, campaign parts and shop equipment as needed.

• Be prepared to put customers in an SRC or alternative transportation if needed.

 

Reception – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and print a copy for technicians.   Provide SRC or an alternative vehicle, as needed.  If a customer has declined the campaign, note this on the repair order and request the customer’s signature next to the statement.

 

Repair – Always plug in the GDS before starting the repair. Make sure to complete an MPI on all vehicles and Quality Control your work.

• The front wheels must be removed to gain access to all of the ball joint fasteners.
• Submit claim on Campaign Claim Entry screen
• If a part is found in need of replacement while performing Recall 185 and the affected part is still under warranty, submit a separate claim using the same Repair Order. If the affected part is out of warranty, submit a Prior Approval Request for goodwill consideration prior to performing the work.

 

Return – Review all completed campaign and repairs to answer any customer questions. Also, schedule the customer’s next service

 

Reconnect – Follow up for customer satisfaction.

Q5: What will be done during the recall service at the dealer?

A5: Hyundai Motor America plans to notify owners of affected vehicles to return their vehicles to Hyundai dealers to inspect and tighten the ball joint fasteners, if necessary. The procedure will be performed at no charge.  Monetary reimbursement to owners for prior related repairs will be made available in accordance with the plan submitted to the agency on May 16, 2018.
