Right Rear Wheel Lug Nuts May Be Loose

Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019 Ioniq Hybrid and 2020 Elantra vehicles. The right-side rear wheel lug nuts may have been insufficiently tightened, allowing the wheel to detach from the vehicle.

 

Remedy

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, tighten the lug nuts, free of charge. The recall began November 15, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-251-0871. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 184.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Hyundai has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2020 Hyundai Elantra vehicles produced between July 2, 2019 and August 01, 2019 and certain model year 2019 Hyundai Ioniq vehicles produced between July 3, 2019 and July 23, 2019 by Hyundai Motor Company (“HMC”) in the Republic of Korea. Our records indicate that your vehicle is affected.

 

What is the problem?

The lug nuts securing the rear right-hand wheel to the hub assembly on the subject vehicles may have been insufficiently tightened during vehicle assembly, increasing the risk of wheel detachment while driving. A detached wheel while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

 

What will Hyundai do?

Your Hyundai dealer will inspect and tighten the lug nuts, if necessary. This procedure will be performed at NO CHARGE to you.

 

What should you do?

Please contact your nearest Hyundai dealer to schedule the recall repair as soon as possible.

The actual time required to perform the installation will take less than one hour, however your vehicle may be needed longer, therefore we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.
