Chronology :
April 2022
On April 22, 2022, KMX notified HMA’s NASO of a condition involving an under-torqued steering column u-joint retention bolt on a 2022 model year Hyundai
Accent test vehicle. The condition was discovered during a routine drive evaluation upon detection of abnormal noise in the steering column assembly. According to KMX, the torque wrench used to install the retention bolt was not updated to the correct specification for tightening torque. KMX informed NASO that all but two (2) potentially affected vehicles were contained based on a review of manufacturing historical records.
On April 27, 2022, NASO’s Data Review Committee reviewed KMX’s findings and decided to escalate the matter as a new safety investigation to the Technical Review Committee for further review and consideration of appropriate field action.
Based on the information received from KMX and subsequent analysis by the TRC, on April 29, 2022, HMA convened its North America Safety Decision Authority and decided to initiate a new safety recall of the two Hyundai
Accent vehicles released for sale in the U.S. market.
As of the date of this filing, there are no confirmed crashes, injuries, or related incidents in the U.S.
