CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS LEADING UP TO DEFECT DECISION [AMENDED]
❖ February 2022
On February 7, 2022, HMA issued a Quality Information Report (“QIR”) to HMC noting a trending rate of claims related to an inability to open the trunk on certain model year Hyundai
Sonata and Sonata HEV vehicles. NASO’s Data Review Committee (“DRC”) reviewed the market analysis on February 16, 2022 and decided to escalate the investigation to the Technical Review Committee for further analysis.
❖ March 2022
During routine discussion regarding ongoing safety-related investigations, HMC notified HMA’s NASO that the pawl material used on Sonata-equipped trunk latches was changed in April 2020 as a level-up countermeasure aimed at withstanding thermal contraction and possible breakage when attempting to disengage the pawl. HMC confirmed that similar pawls were installed in certain model year Genesis
G70 vehicles equipped with non-powered trunk lids; however powered trunk lids, which use a different pawl design, were installed on all G70 vehicles produced after May 8, 2019. NASO’s TRC noted that a damaged trunk latch pawl could compromise full operation of the trunk’s emergency release lever and result in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 401 “Interior Trunk Release” referring back to prior investigations and discussion with the agency related to Recall 208, which addressed a similar defect condition. HMC confirmed that the pawls associated with Recall 208 were produced with a different Tier 2 supplier than the pawls in this subject recall, and thus were investigated separately and corrected in production in October 2017.
Based on this information, on March 21, 2022, NASO convened its North American Safety Decision Authority and decided to file a new noncompliance recall to address the condition in all affected Hyundai
/Genesis
vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.
As of the date of this filing, Hyundai
has identified 169 reports received from February 22, 2019, through February 10, 2022, alleging the defect condition in the U.S. market. Hyundai
is not aware of any confirmed crashes, injuries or fires related to the recall condition.

While engaged under this condition, an attempt to release the pawl and open the trunk lid could result in damage to the pawl. FMVSS 1 : 401 – Internal trunk release FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : A damaged pawl could prevent opening of the trunk lid through actuation of the emergency trunk release, which could increase the risk of injury to occupants. As such, the involved vehicles might not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 401, “Interior Trunk Release.” Description of the Cause : The pawl material is insufficient at withstanding environmental conditions involving high ambient temperature. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The trunk lid may require increased effort to open from the latched position. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : LATCH ASSY-TRUNK LID Component Description : Trunk latch assembly (Sonata) Component Part Number : 81230L0000 Component Name 2 : LATCH ASSY-TRUNK LID Component Description : Trunk latch assembly (Sonata HEV, G70) Component Part Number : 81230G9001 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-196 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Pyeong Hwa Automotive Address : 392 Seongseo4chacheomdan-ro Dalseo-gu Daegu Foreign States Country : Korea, Republic of Chronology : February 2022 On February 7, 2022, HMA issued a Quality Information Report (“QIR”) to HMC noting a trending rate of claims related to an inability to open the trunk on certain model year Hyundai
Sonata and Sonata HEV vehicles. NASO’s Data Review Committee (“DRC”) reviewed the market analysis on February 16, 2022 and decided to escalate the investigation to the Technical Review Committee for further analysis. March 2022 During routine discussion regarding ongoing safety-related investigations, HMC notified HMA’s NASO that the pawl material used on Sonata-equipped trunk latches was changed in April 2020 as a level-up countermeasure aimed at withstanding thermal contraction and possible breakage when attempting to disengage the pawl. Additionally, HMC confirmed that similar pawls were installed in certain model year Genesis
401 “Interior Trunk Release” referring back to prior investigations and discussion with the agency. Based on this information, NASO convened its North American Safety Decision Authority on March 21, 2022 and decided to file a new noncompliance recall to address the condition in all affected Hyundai
/Genesis
vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. As of the date of this filing, Hyundai
has identified 169 reports received from February 22, 2019 through February 10, 2022 alleging the defect condition in the U.S. market. Hyundai
is not aware of any confirmed crashes, injuries or fires related to the recall condition.
