21. Mileage writing is completed.
Select “OK”.
22. Confirm the mileage displayed on the new instrument cluster is correct.
23. Turn the ignition OFF and reinstall all parts in reverse order of removal.
Description of Campaign:
Hyundai is initiating recall campaign 217, a noncompliance recall to repair a condition involving the instrument panel cluster display in certain Hyundai vehicles in the U.S. and Canadian markets. Hyundai is conducting this action to ensure the safety of its vehicles for Hyundai customers.
The instrument panel (“IP”) cluster liquid-crystal display (“LCD”) in the subject vehicles may have been produced with incorrect resistors resulting in the possibility of an inverted image of associated controls, gauges, and telltale indicators upon startup of the vehicle at extremely low temperatures. As such, the subject vehicles may not meet the requirements set forth in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) 101 – “Controls and Displays.” This condition will not suddenly occur during normal driving.
Affected Vehicles:
- Certain 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid (TM HEV) produced on October 25, 2021 through December 1, 2021 by Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) for sale in the U.S. market.
- Certain 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid (TM PHEV) produced on October 25, 2021 through December 1, 2021 by Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) for sale in the U.S. market.
Recommended Alternative Transportation:
It is recommended that Service Rental Cars (SRCs) are made available for customers that are concerned with the safe operation of their vehicle prior to release of final remedy. Additionally, it is advisable to utilize a SRC while final remedy repairs are being completed.
Customer FAQ
Q1: What is the safety concern?
A1: Certain controls, gauges, and telltale indicators could, if illegible, increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Q2: What will be done during the recall service at the dealer?
A2: All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer to have the IP cluster replaced. This remedy will be offered at no cost for all affected customers. Hyundai will provide reimbursement to owners for repairs according to the plan submitted to NHTSA on May 16, 2018.
Q3: When will owners be notified?
A3: Owners will be notified beginning in late February 2022. NHTSA has been notified of this recall.
Chronology :
November 2021
On November 26, 2021, HMC discovered a condition on a HEV vehicle in which the IP cluster’s LCD displayed an inverted image. HMC began investigating manufacturing records for potential causes.
On December 16, 2021, NASO was notified by HMC of a concern involving recent IP clusters with incorrect resistors that were installed into certain Hyundai Santa Fe HEV/PHEV vehicles. NASO conducted a review of field information and did not locate any related incidents in the U.S. market; however, based on HMC and the assembly plant’s information, NASO escalated the investigation to its Technical Review Committee for further assessment. On December 20, NASO convened its North America Safety Decision Authority and decided to initiate a new recall for all affected vehicles in the U.S. market.
Regarding field claim counts from all available data sources at the time of the filing, Hyundai is not aware of any incidents, crashes, fires, or injuries related to the defect condition in the U.S.

J2534 Diagnostic & Reprogramming - Hyundai
J2534 Reprogramming Software:
The Hyundai Motor America (HMA) J2534 reprogramming software allows for a common method of communication between aPC and a vehicle electronic control unit (ECU). U.S. EPA and CARB regulations mandate that all 2004 and later vehicle powertrain ECUs support emission-related reprogramming.
Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)
The Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software supports a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant passthru VCI device for use on Hyundai vehicles sold in the US. The devices, firmware, and application programming interfaces listed below have been tested by HMA and under no circumstances do we recommend the use of a non-approved J2534 device. HMA has worked closely with the following J2534 device manufacturers to ensure the hardware and software comply with all J2534-1/2 specifications.
