Remedy

will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS module fuse, free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the remedy is complete. Owner notification letters were mailed July 6, 2021. Owners can contact Hyundai

customers while continuing its investigation into possible root cause(s) of this concern.
Q1: What is the issue?
A1: The subject vehicles are equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System (“ABS”) modules that could malfunction internally and cause an electrical short over time potentially resulting in an engine compartment fire.
Q2: What are the affected vehicles?
A2: The subject vehicles include 94,646 model year 2015-2020 Hyundai
Genesis
and Genesis
G80 vehicles produced from February 21, 2014 through January 17, 2020.
Q3: What is the safety concern?
A3: An electrical short could result in significant overcurrent in the ABS module increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Q4: Have there been any accidents or injuries?
A4: As of the date of this filing, Hyundai
is not aware of any confirmed crashes or injuries attributable to the recall condition. Two (2) related vehicle fires have been confirmed in the U.S. market. No related vehicle fires have occurred in foreign markets.
Q5: What will be done during the recall service at the dealer?
A5: Customers can continue driving these vehicles; however Hyundai
recommends parking these vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed. Hyundai
plans to notify owners to bring their vehicles to the nearest Hyundai
dealership for replacement of the ABS module fuse.
The remedy procedure will be performed at no charge. Hyundai
will provide reimbursement to owners for repairs according to the plan submitted on May 16, 2018.

A6: Owners were mailed interim notification letters in early May 2021 regarding a remedy not yet available. Owners will be mailed a final letter regarding remedy now available in June/July 2021.

1. If applicable, record the customer’s radio preset stations and turn the ignition switch OFF.
Open the trunk and remove the negative battery terminal (A) by loosening the nut.

2. Open the hood.
3. Remove the engine room junction box upper cover.
4. Remove the ESC/VDC1, ESC/VDC2 40A fuses (B).
5. Install the supplied fuses (C).
- ESC/VDC1 → 20A
- ESC/VDC2 → 25A
6. Attach the supplied sticker labels (D) to the upper fuse cover in these positions:
- ESC/VDC1: 20A
- ESC/VDC2: 25A
7. Install the upper cover.
8. Reinstall the negative battery terminal, torque the nut to specification, and reprogram the customer’s radio preset stations.

RECALL 201/006G ATTACHMENT A
CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS LEADING UP TO DEFECT DECISION
- September 2018 – October 2018
HMA’s North American Safety Office (“NASO”) received a notice of an upcoming vehicle fire inspection involving a model year 2016 Hyundai
Genesis
vehicle. According to the notice, the ABS module was a suspected point of origin. While waiting for the results of the inspection, NASO conducted a search of field information and found one (1) other report indicating visible smoke from the engine compartment. The incident part was recovered and a Quality Information Report (“QIR”) was sent to HMC with the incident part requesting further analysis into root cause.
- November 2018
HMC informed NASO that the recovered incident part could have electrically shorted due to water or moisture intrusion, potentially due to preexisting damage to the ABS module cover prior to the incident. NASO updated its investigation and continued to monitor incoming field information for similar reports.
- May 2019 – August 2019
NASO received the recovered ABS module from the aforementioned vehicle inspection, and three (3) additional ABS module warranty returns. Of the three warranty returns, two (2) came from vehicles alleging visible smoke from the engine compartment and one (1) came from a confirmed vehicle fire. All incident parts were sent to HMC for root cause analysis.
- November 2019
NASO received a response to its QIR noting that HMC had concluded that 1 out of 5 ABS modules sent confirmed moisture contamination due to impact-related damage found on the ABS module ECU cover. A root cause for the remaining incident parts could not be determined at this time. NASO updated its investigation and continued to monitor field information.
- December 2020
By December 2020, no new incidents had been received. During this time, HMC was actively investigating allegations of engine compartment fires on other vehicles equipped with ABS modules supplied by the same supplier. Noting the prior incidents occurring in 2018-2019 where a root cause could not be determined, HMC began a joint investigation with the supplier focusing on the DH
(Genesis
/G80) platform ABS modules in addition to other models using Mando-supplied ABS modules.
- February – March 2021
On February 22, 2021, HMC informed NASO of its investigation findings. Based on the information received, on March 2, 2021, HMA convened its North American Safety Decision Authority (“NASDA”) and decided to conduct a safety recall in the U.S. market to address the condition of non-crash engine compartment fires caused by internal shorting of the ABS module on the subject vehicles.
- As of the date of this filing, Hyundai
is not aware of any confirmed crashes or injuries attributable to the recall condition. Two (2) related vehicle fires have been confirmed in the U.S. market. No related vehicle fires have occurred in foreign markets.

vehicles produced for sale in the U.S. market. Hyundai
is initiating this action to ensure the safety and compliance of its vehicles and the satisfaction of Hyundai
customers while continuing its investigation into possible root cause(s) of this concern.
The subject vehicles are equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System (“ABS”) modules that could malfunction internally and cause an electrical short over time. An electrical short in the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) may increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.
Service Action
Reservation – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and advise the customer on time requirements.
Readiness – Review this announcement and the accompanying FAQs with all Service and Parts staff including
Reservationist/BDC. Also, complete all applicable training, check your reservation capacity settings (you can set separate capacities for every recall/campaign), confirm email addresses for campaign appointments, and that you have all necessary tools, campaign parts and shop equipment as needed.
o Be prepared to hold the vehicle and put customers in an SRC or alternative transportation, if needed.
o Please ensure to park these vehicles outdoors and/or away from structures until the vehicle is remedied.
o Recommended Level of Technician Certification and/or Completed Coursework to perform TSB work:
Expert Certified Service Technician with one or more years’ experience servicing or repairing Hyundai
electrical systems
Reception – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and print a copy for technicians. Provide SRC or an alternative vehicle, as needed. If a customer has declined the campaign, note this on the repair order and request the customer’s signature next to the statement.
Repair – Always plug in the GDS before starting the repair. Make sure to complete an MPI on all vehicles and Quality Control your work.
• Refer to TSB# 21-01-032H for inspection and service procedures
• If applicable, record the customer’s radio preset stations and turn the ignition switch OFF prior to starting the service
procedures.
Return – Review all completed campaigns/recalls and repairs to answer any customer questions. Also, schedule the
customer’s next service.
Reconnect – Follow up for customer satisfaction.
