Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2012 Hyundai Elantra and Sonata Hybrid, 2012 Accent and Veloster vehicles. The 12V accessory socket outlet may have been over-tightened during installation, possibly disabling the thermal fuse and allowing the outlet to overheat with prolonged use, such as by using the Tire Mobility Kit air compressor to inflate a tire.

Remedy

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Tire Mobility Kit accessory outlet plug with a direct-to-battery connection wire harness kit, free of charge. The recall began September 28, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 193.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Q&A

Q1: What is the issue?

A1: The subject vehicles are equipped with accessory Tire Mobility Kits (“TMK”) intended for use by customers to temporarily repair a flat or punctured tire. The TMK air compressor can be powered by the vehicle’s 12V accessory outlet, which contains a thermal fuse that cuts the outlet’s power to safeguard against overheating. Certain accessory outlets may have been installed with excess torque disabling the operation of the thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse is disabled, the outlet could eventually overheat with prolonged use of the TMK air compressor.

Q2: What are the affected vehicles?

A2: The subject vehicles include:

  1. Certain model year 2011-2012 Hyundai Elantra vehicles produced between October 19, 2010 and December 1, 2011 by Hyundai Motor Company (“HMC”) for sale in the U.S. market, and Elantra vehicles produced between December 30, 2010 and January 16, 2012 by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (“HMMA”) for sale in the U.S. market.
  2. Certain model year 2012 Hyundai Accent vehicles produced between March 23, 2011 and February 21, 2012 by Hyundai Motor Company (“HMC”) for sale in the U.S. market.
  3. Certain model year 2012 Hyundai Veloster vehicles produced between July 2, 2011 and January 20, 2012 by Hyundai Motor Company (“HMC”) for sale in the U.S. market.
  4. Certain model year 2011-2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vehicles produced between August 31, 2010 and November 10, 2011 by Hyundai Motor Company for sale in the U.S. market.

Q3: What is the safety concern?

A3: Prolonged use of an overheated accessory outlet could increase the risk of a vehicle fire.

Q4: Have there been any accidents or injuries?

A4: Hyundai is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition in the U.S. market.

Q5: What will be done during the recall service at the dealer?

A5: The remedy is being developed. The remedy procedure will be performed at no charge. Hyundai will provide reimbursement to owners for repairs according to the plan submitted to NHTSA on May 16, 2018.

Q6: When will owners be notified?

A6: Owners will be mailed notification letters beginning in late August 2020.

Description: Applicable vehicles are equipped with Tire Mobility Kits (TMK) intended for use by customers to temporarily repair a flat or punctured tire. Prolonged use of an overheated accessory could increase the risk of a vehicle fire. This bulletin describes the procedure to install the Direct Battery Connection Harness to the TMK air compressor.

Service Procedure:

1. Label attachment

a. If the TMK part number is 52933- 1P000, install the TMK Label on the area shown.

NOTICE

Ensure the surface of the TMK is clean and dry. Place the label on evenly.

b. If the TMK part number is 52933-2Y000, install the TMK Label on the side of the TMK in the area shown.

NOTICE

Ensure the surface of the TMK is clean and dry. Place the label on evenly.

2. Apply the Harness Label to the positive terminal of the harness, next to the fuse holder as shown.

3. Slide the male connector from the TMK air compressor harness through the supplied Heat Shrink Tube. Ensure the surface of the TMK is clean and dry. Place the label on evenly.

NOTICE

Place the label on evenly.

4. Connect the TMK male connector to the female connector of the Direct Battery Connection Harness.

5. Slide the Heat Shrink Tube over the two connected components so it is seated at the collar as shown.

6. Using a heat gun, carefully shrink the tubing over the connector.

NOTICE

Be careful not to damage the wiring. Maintain a proper distance, do not let the heat gun get too close to the wiring or connector. Allow for the connector to cool down before putting the components back into the case.

7. Following the instructions on the leaflet, connect the Direct Battery Connection to a power supply and verify the TMK air compressor powers on.

8. Put the leaflet and spare fuses (see parts information section, items 5 and 6) back into the TMK case or under the folding flap of the TMK.

573 Defect Information Report for Recall 193

Attachment A

Chronology of events leading up to the defect decision:

  • October 2011

HMA received its first report of the defect condition on October 6, 2011.  The report alleged the 12V accessory outlet on a model year 2012 Accent vehicle began to smoke and eventually burn certain dashboard components while using an aftermarket air compressor.  HMA notified HMC of the field incident.  HMC concluded the usage of aftermarket compressors would not be sufficient to start a fire due to a thermal fuse in the accessory socket.  The thermal fuse is designed to cut accessory power when detecting higher than normal operating temperatures.  Based on this information, HMA began to actively monitor for future incidents.

  • February 2013 – October 2018

HMA actively monitored incoming reports for additional incidents.  No reports of a fire in connection with usage of a TMK on the subject vehicles were received during this time.

  • November 2018

HMA received a report involving an Elantra vehicle that caught fire while parked inside a garage.  The customer alleged the OEM-issued tire mobility kit was plugged into the accessory outlet at the time of the incident.  Hyundai inspected the vehicle but could not determine a cause of the fire from the vehicle due to the extent of damage.  HMA informed HMC of the new incident.

  • December 2018

HMC attempted replicating the phenomenon by running an OEM air compressor while plugged into the 12V accessory outlet.  The test did not replicate the phenomenon.  HMC requested HMA to secure an in-use vehicle for further attempts to replicate the condition.

  • April 2019

HMA and HMC conducted a test to replicate the condition on three (3) buyback vehicles.  The test produced smoke in at least one of the vehicles.  None of the tests resulted in a fire with prolonged use of the TMK air compressor.  A root cause could not be determined in the test resulting in smoke.  HMC decided to actively monitor complaints while continuing to increase efforts to replicate the alleged condition.

  • February – April 2020

Despite having not received any new reports of a fire in connection with usage of the TMK on the subject vehicles since the November 2018 incident, HMC increased efforts to replicate the phenomenon through additional testing.

  • June 2020

HMC received information of certain vehicles containing accessory sockets that may have been installed with excess torque.  The over-torqued condition could render the thermal inoperable.  HMC used this information to conduct a new replication test involving accessory sockets that were over-torqued.  The testing produced the condition of smoking and melting of certain dash components.  HMC informed HMA of this information on June 24, 2020.

  • Based on the information received, HMA’s NASO convened its North American Technical Committee on June 25, 2020 and decided to conduct a safety recall of vehicles affected by the over-torqued condition of the accessory outlet.

  • To date, Hyundai is unaware of any injuries attributed to this condition.
