Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013 Veloster vehicles that are equipped with 1.6 liter turbo engines. The engine management software may cause premature ignition (pre-ignition) of the air/fuel mixture in the engine. The resulting excessive cylinder pressure may damage the engine.

 

Remedy

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will update the engine management software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 13, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 182.

Description: This bulletin describes the procedure to update the engine ECM (Engine Control Module) on certain 2013MY Veloster vehicles equipped with 1.6L Turbo engines. The engine management software may cause premature ignition (pre-ignition) of the air/fuel mixture in the engine. Pre-ignition in an engine cylinder could cause excessive cylinder pressure eventually leading to engine damage. Engine damage can increase the risk of a fire or cause an engine stall.

Service Procedure:

NOTICE

  • Perform the software update in Auto Mode first. Perform the update in Manual Mode only if necessary.
  • Check the ROM ID of the vehicle’s ECM and cluster and reference the ROM ID Information Table before attempting any updates.
  • Ensure the GDS Mobile and the vehicle’s battery are fully charged. Run the engine to charge the battery if necessary before attempting any updates.
  • Turn off all lamps and do not leave the head lamp switch in auto mode. Turn off all accessories (including heater, A/C, blower, radio, seat warmer, defroster, etc.). Do  not allow the battery to be discharged during update.
  • Perform update with the ignition switch in the ON position.
  • Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or scan tool during update.
  • Do not start the engine during update.
  • Do not turn off the ignition switch during update unless specifically directed by the GDS Mobile.

 

  1. Perform GDS software update:
  • Refer to TSB 15-GI-001 for the tablet-based Mobile GDS ECU update procedures.
  • Refer to TSB 15-GI-002 for the PC-based GDS ECU update procedures. 
  1. After successful completion of the software update, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes in ALL menus and erase any DTC.
  1. Erase the DTC in the BlueLink system per TSB 12-BE-005-2.
  1. Ensure no warning lights are present to complete the procedure.

What is the problem?

The engine management software in the subject vehicles could cause premature ignition of air/fuel mixture in the engine cylinder (“pre-ignition”). Pre-ignition in an engine cylinder could cause excessive cylinder pressure eventually leading to engine damage. A damaged engine could lead to a high-speed stall, increasing the risk of a crash, or a vehicle fire.

 

What will Hyundai do?

Your Hyundai dealer will reprogram the engine management software. This procedure will be performed at NO CHARGE to you.

 

What should you do?

Please contact your nearest Hyundai dealer to schedule the recall repair as soon as possible.

The actual time required to reprogram the engine management software will take less than one hour, however your vehicle may be needed longer; therefore we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.

Dealers should also perform all open recalls on used vehicles, demo and rental vehicles prior to placing them into customer use and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

Affected Vehicles

Hyundai Motor America has announced a safety recall to reprogram the engine management software in certain model year 2013 Hyundai Veloster vehicles equipped with a 1.6 liter turbo engine produced from April 26, 2012 to October 16, 2013 by Hyundai Motor Company at the Ulsan plant in the Republic of Korea.

The recall affects approximately 16,500 vehicles.

Hyundai is initiating this action to ensure the safety and quality of its vehicles and the continued satisfaction of its customers.  

 

Description

The engine management software in the subject vehicles could cause premature ignition of air/fuel mixture in the engine cylinder (“preignition”).  Pre-ignition in an engine cylinder could cause excessive cylinder pressure, eventually leading to engine damage.  A damaged engine could lead to a high-speed stall and, in limited cases, a vehicle fire.

 

Service Action

Reservation – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and advise the customer on time requirements. 

Readiness – Review this announcement and the accompanying FAQs with all Service and Parts staff including

Reservationist/BDC. Also, complete all applicable training, check your reservation capacity settings (you can set separate capacities for every recall/campaign), confirm email addresses for campaign appointments, and that you have all necessary tools, campaign parts and shop equipment as needed.

  • This campaign can be completed quickly and does not require a hoist.

 

Reception – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and print a copy for technicians.   Provide SRC or an alternative vehicle, as needed.  If a customer has declined the campaign, note this on the repair order and request the customer’s signature next to the statement.

 

Repair – Always plug in the GDS before starting the repair. Make sure to complete an MPI on all vehicles and Quality Control your work.

  • To verify the vehicle is affected, be sure to check the ROM ID of the vehicle’s ECM and reference the ROM ID

Information Table before attempting any updates.

  • Refer to TSB 15-GI-001 for the tablet-based Mobile GDS ECU update
  • Refer to TSB 15-GI-002 for the PC-based GDS ECU update procedures
  • Perform the software update in Auto mode first. Perform the update in Manual mode only if necessary.
  • Ensure the GDS Mobile is fully charged
  • This campaign requires the vehicle’s battery voltage to be above 12 volts for software update to be performed. You can maintain vehicle battery voltage by connecting a charger to the battery or operate the vehicle in Ready mode for at least 20 minutes to ensure an adequate battery state of charge for reliable update results.
  • After successful completion of the software update, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes in ALL menus and erase any DTC
  • Erase the DTC in the Blue Link system per TSB 12-BE-005-2.
  • Ensure no warning lights are present to complete the procedure.

Return – Review all completed campaign and repairs to answer any customer questions. Also, schedule the customer’s next service.

 

Reconnect – Follow up for customer satisfaction.

Non-crash Fires

Dated opened: August 21, 2018

On June 11, 2018, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned NHTSA to conduct a defect investigation into non-crash fires on model year 2011-2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe vehicles. The CAS petition cited at least 120 Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of fires and additional 229 VOQs of melted wires, smoke and/or burning odors, indicating potential fires on these vehicles, as of June 7, 2018.

ODI’s preliminary review of the VOQs indicates the majority of the reported fires appears to be related to the engine failures covered by two current Recall Queries: RQ17-003 on Kia vehicles and RQ17-004 on Hyundai vehicles. ODI is opening a Defect Petition to review the petition, VOQs, Early Warning Data, and other information on the subject vehicles followed by a decision to grant or deny the petition.

J2534 Reprogramming Software:

The Hyundai Motor America (HMA) J2534 reprogramming software allows for a common method of communication between aPC and a vehicle electronic control unit (ECU). U.S. EPA and CARB regulations mandate that all 2004 and later vehicle powertrain ECUs support emission-related reprogramming.

 

Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)

The Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software supports a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant passthru VCI device for use on Hyundai vehicles sold in the US. The devices, firmware, and application programming interfaces listed below have been tested by HMA and under no circumstances do we recommend the use of a non-approved J2534 device.
