Engine Oil Leak May Cause Stall or Fire

A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2013 Tucson vehicles. The engine oil pan may leak and, if not addressed, the loss of oil may result in engine damage.

 

Remedy

The remedy for this recall is still under development. Hyundai will send owners an interim letter informing them of the issue beginning March 29, 2019. A second notification will be sent when the remedy is available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 181.

Affected Vehicles

Hyundai Motor America has launched a safety recall to install an updated oil pressure switch and, if necessary based on vehicle inspection, an oil pan in certain model year 2011 through 2013 Hyundai Tucson vehicles equipped with 2.4 liter engines produced from May 19, 2010 to December 31, 2012 by Hyundai Motor Company at the Ulsan plant in the Republic of Korea.

 

The affected vehicles include:

  • Certain 2011-2013 MY Tucson vehicles equipped with 2.4L engines
  • Hyundai has identified the VINs for recall 181 and are published and available in WebDCS.

 

Hyundai is initiating this action to ensure the safety and quality of its vehicles and the continued satisfaction of Hyundai customers.  

 

Description

Certain Model Year 2011 through 2013 Hyundai Tucson vehicles equipped with 2.4L engines may have an engine oil leak from the seal between the oil pan and engine block, which, if left unrepaired and operated over time, could eventually lead to engine damage. A damaged engine could lead to a high-speed stall and, in limited cases, a vehicle fire.

 

Service Action

Reservation – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and advise the customer on time requirements.

  • Provide customer with transportation options such as an SRC, alternative vehicle, shuttle or rideshare. 

Readiness – Review this announcement and the accompanying FAQs with all Service and Parts staff including

Reservationist/BDC. Also, complete all applicable training, check your reservation capacity settings (you can set separate capacities for every recall/campaign), confirm email addresses for campaign appointments, and that you have all necessary tools, campaign parts and shop equipment as needed.

  • Be prepared to put customers in an SRC or alternative transportation if replacement parts are not available.
  • Make sure to have the proper SST – Oil Pan Remover (09215-3C000) available to complete this recall.

 

Reception – Always check the Vehicle Information Screen in WebDCS for open campaigns and recalls, and print a copy for technicians.   Provide SRC or an alternative vehicle, as needed.  If a customer has declined the campaign, note this on the repair order and request the customer’s signature next to the statement.

 

Repair – Always plug in the GDS before starting the repair. Make sure to complete an MPI on all vehicles and Quality Control your work.

  • Always refer to the most recent TSB (TSB# 19-01-012H.) for all vehicle service procedures.
  • This recall will require the replacement of parts even if the vehicle is not leaking oil. The following inspection results will require:
    • If there is evidence of oil leakage (Past or Present) – replace the oil pressure switch and oil pan according to the service procedure found in TSB# 19-01-012H.
    • If there is NO evidence of oil leakage – Replace the oil pressure switch according to TSB# 19-01-012H
  • When using the SST between the oil pan and the ladder frame, make sure to use a plastic hammer to tap it (avoid moving the SST without tapping as the SST can be damaged).
  • When applying sealant to the new oil pan flange surface, make sure to: o Tighten the oil pan bolts within 5 minutes of applying the sealant. o Sealant should not protrude into the inside of the oil pan o To prevent leakage of oil, apply sealant on the inner threads of the bolt holes.
  • If vehicle requires parts replacement and parts are not available, vehicle must be downed and customer put in an SRC vehicle or alternative transportation until repair can be completed.
  • Check for DTCs and perform the appropriate diagnostic service after inspection or repair is performed.

 

Return – Review all completed campaign and repairs to answer any customer questions. Also, schedule the customer’s next service

 

Reconnect – Follow up for customer satisfaction.

Description: Certain 2011-2013 MY Tucson vehicles equipped with 2.4L engines may have an engine oil leak from the seal between the oil pan and engine block which, if left unrepaired and operated over time, could eventually lead to engine damage. A damaged engine could lead to a highspeed stall and, in limited cases, a vehicle fire. This bulletin describes the procedure to install an updated oil pressure switch and, if necessary based on vehicle inspection, an oil pan.

 

The updated oil pressure switch is designed to detect low oil volume and prevent potential engine damage or failure due to an engine oil leak. If the oil pressure light comes on after the updated oil pressure switch is installed, verify the engine oil level and quality, check for oil leaks, and change the engine oil if needed.

 

Applicable Vehicles:

Certain 2011-2013 MY Tucson (LM) vehicles equipped with 2.4L engines

 

Service Procedure:

OIL PAN INSPECTION:

  1. Lift the vehicle and remove the undercover (A).
  1. Inspect for engine oil leakage from the engine oil pan.

 

If there is evidence of oil leakage (past or present):

Replace the oil pressure switch and oil pan according to the following service procedure.

 

If there is NO evidence of oil leakage:

Replace the oil pressure switch according to the following service procedure.

 

NOTE:

If the oil pressure switch was previously replaced using OP Code 91C012R0 for this campaign and the oil pan is now leaking, replace the oil pan only using OP CODE : 91C012R2.

 

OIL PRESSURE SWITCH REPLACEMENT:

  1. Loosen the the intake manifold stay bolts and remove the intake manifold stay (A).

 

Tightening torque:
18.6 ~ 23.5N.m (1.9 ~ 2.4kgf.m, 13.7 ~ 17.4lb-ft)

 

  1. Replace the oil pressure switch (B) with a new one and reinstall the removed parts in reverse order of removal. The oil pressure switch is located near the back of the starter (C).

 

Tightening torque:
7.8 ~ 11.8N.m (0.8 ~ 1.2kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 8.7lb-ft)

 

  1. Check for DTCs and perform the appropriate diagnostic service. Ensure no warning lights are present to complete the procedure.

 

OIL PAN REPLACEMENT:

(Only if necessary based on oil pan inspection) 

  1. Remove the oil filler cap and oil drain plug and drain the engine oil.
  1. Loosen the A/C compressor lower mounting bolts (A).
  1. Loosen the bolts and remove the A/C compressor bracket (B).
  2. Remove the oil pan bolts. Then insert the SST (09215-3C000) between the ladder frame and oil pan (C) and gently remove the oil pan.

 

NOTICE

Insert the SST between the oil pan and the ladder frame by tapping it with a plastic hammer in the direction of (1).

Tap the SST with a plastic hammer around the perimeter of the oil pan in the direction of (2) to remove it.

Do not move the SST without tapping (SST could be damaged).

 

  1. Remove ALL the old sealant from the engine. The mating surface with the oil pan should be completely free of any old sealant or debris.

 

NOTICE

The new oil pan could leak if the old sealant is not completely removed.

 

  1. Apply sealant at the two mating sections of the ladder frame and chain cover as shown.

Bead width : 2.5 mm

 

  1. Apply sealant to the new oil pan flange surface as shown in the diagram.

Bead width : 2.5 ~ 3.0mm

 

NOTICE

Tighten the oil pan bolts within 5 minutes of applying the sealant.

Sealant should not protrude into the inside of the oil pan.

 

To prevent leakage of oil, apply sealant on the inner threads of the bolt holes.

 

The distance from the center of the bead to the inside wall of the oil pan is 5 mm. For the three specific areas shown, this distance is 8 or 10 mm.

 

  1. Install the new oil pan and tighten the bolts evenly on the perimeter of the oil pan in several passes until torque specification is reached.

 

NOTE: Do not install bolt (E). 

Tightening torque for oil pan M12 bolts (D):
26.5 ~ 30.4N.m (2.7 ~ 3.1 Kgf.m, 19.5~22. 4 lb-ft)

 

Tightening torque for oil pan M10 bolts:
9.8 ~ 11.8N.m (1.0 ~ 1.2 Kgf.m, 7.2~8.7 lb-ft)

 

  1. Install the A/C compressor bracket and tighten the bolts.

 

Tightening torque:

19.6 ~ 23.5N.m (2.0 ~ 2.4 Kgf.m, 14.5~17. 4 lb-ft)

 

  1. Reinstall the removed parts in reverse order of removal.

 

Wait at least 30 minutes after assembling the oil pan before refilling the engine oil.

 

  1. Refill the engine oil referring to the applicable vehicle shop manual.
  1. Check for DTCs and perform the appropriate diagnostic service. Ensure no warning lights are  present to complete the procedure.

Your Hyundai Dealer will inspect for the presence of an oil pan leak and repair it as necessary.  Dealers will also install an updated oil pressure switch and, if necessary based on vehicle inspection, an oil pan. The procedure will be performed at NO CHARGE.

On September 10, 2015, Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) filed a Defect Information Report (DIR) recalling 470,000 MY 2011 and 2012 Sonata vehicles with ?”Theta II” engines (Recall No. 15V-568). Hyundai’s DIR described the defect as an issue involving manufacturing debris. Hyundai limited the population of recalled vehicles to those produced on or prior to April 12, 2012, stating that a process change in April 2012 resolved the issue of manufacturing debris.

On March 31, 2017, Hyundai expanded its original recall to include 572,000 MY 2013-2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles with “Theta II” engines (Recall No. 17V-226). The DIR continues to describe the defect as an issue involving manufacturing debris.

This RQ is being opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of Hyundai’s “Theta II” engine recalls, and Hyundai’s compliance with reporting requirements.
