Driver’s Seat Belt Anchor not Fastened Correctly

If the bolt was not sufficiently tightened, driver’s seat belt may come unanchored in a collision, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant.

 

Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Santa Fe Sport vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the bolt for the driver’s seat belt anchor might not have been sufficiently tightened during assembly.

 

Remedy

Hyundai will notify owners and dealers will verify that the driver’s seatbelt anchor is properly secured, free of charge.

The recall began July 7, 2017.

As required by federal law, dealers must not deliver new vehicles for sale or for lease to customers until all open recalls have been performed. Dealers should also perform all open recalls on used vehicles, demo and rental vehicles prior to placing them into customer use and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

 

Affected Vehicles

Hyundai has launched a safety recall in the United States to verify the proper connection between the driver’s seat belt anchor and to the vehicle’s inner sill structure on certain Model Year 2017 and 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport vehicles.

 

Description

The driver’s seat belt anchor in the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is attached to the vehicle’s inner sill structure with a bolt.  The bolt may not have been properly torqued during vehicle assembly.  If the driver’s seat belt detaches from the anchor point in a collision, the risk of injury to the occupant is increased.

NOTE: This issue does not affect the front passenger seat belt assembly.

Service Action

  • The Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #17-01-048 was published 06/12/17, and describes the service procedure to verify the proper connection between the driver’s seat belt anchor and to the vehicle’s inner sill structure.
  • Check your dealership’s affected VIN list in WebDCS under the Service tab > Uncompleted Campaign VIN List.

Vehicles not identified as impacted by an open recall can be immediately released for sale.

Customer Notification

This recall has been posted to the NHTSA website, and you may receive phone calls from customers with questions regarding this matter.  Hyundai will notify all owners of the vehicles described above to return their vehicles to their Hyundai dealers for inspection. Customer notification letters of the recall are scheduled to be mailed beginning in July, 2017.

Q1: What is the issue?

A3: Yes.  This is a simple service procedure.  Customers will receive written notification of the recall by first class mail.

 

Q4: When will owners be notified?

A4: Owners will be mailed notification letters beginning in July, 2017.

 

Q5: Can the recall service be performed now?  (prior to receiving notice)

Dealers must perform this Recall Campaign on all affected vehicles prior to customer retail delivery and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair.

When a vehicle arrives at the service department, access Hyundai Motor America’s “Warranty Vehicle Information” screen via WEBDCS to identify open Campaigns.

 

Description: The driver’s seat belt anchor in the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (AN) is attached to the vehicle’s inner sill structure with a bolt.  The bolt may not have been properly torqued during vehicle assembly.  If the driver’s seat belt detaches from the anchor point in a collision, the risk of injury to the occupant is increased. This bulletin describes the procedure to inspect the driver’s seat belt anchor bolt to confirm it is properly torqued.

NOTE: This issue does not affect the front passenger seat belt assembly.

NOTE 1: Submit Claim on Campaign Claim Entry Screen

NOTE 2: If a part is found in need of replacement while performing Recall 165 and the affected part is still under warranty, please submit a separate claim using the same Repair Order.

If the affected part is out of warranty, submit a Prior Approval Request for goodwill consideration prior to performing the work.

Service Procedure:

  1. Move the driver seat forward to allow access to the driver seat belt anchor bolt (A) located by the lower B pillar trim (B). To access the bolt, pull the anchor bolt cover (C) up to expose the anchor bolt.

  1. Set the torque wrench to nominal (47NM or 34.7 ft-lbs). Apply torque to the anchor bolt until it is tightened to spec.
